Mara May explains that - "In 'Totem' I explore the profound spiritual connection between our people, the land, and the animals that guide us. This artwork serves as a vibrant testament to the role of totems in defining our kinship and social structures within Aboriginal communities. Each totem represents a natural object, plant, or animal linked to a person's ancestral lineage, carrying deep spiritual significance and serving as a living link to our ancestors and The Dreaming. The totems depicted in the painting reflect the responsibilities we hold, fostering stewardship for the natural world and upholding the values of our community."
